This topic reminded me of being at primary school when for science we put a bean seed against the wall of a jam jar and held it in place with blotting paper which was kept moist. There was a race to see whose seed would sprout first.
Of course, some of us forgot to keep the blotting paper watered and our seeds died, others never grew at all but some were magnificent and grew out of the jam jar and across the desk.
